Himalaya Yashtimadhu Gastric Wellness
Yashtimadhu (Licorice) has been used as a sweetener for generations. It is also one of the most researched and studied herbs in terms of its supportive effect on the body’s normal digestive function.
Researchers from the Department of Experimental Pharmacology at the University of Naples (Italy) described Yashtimadhu as a digestive herb that is “widely used and its clinical efficacy has been documented.” They also recommend the use of Yashtimadhu as a dietary supplement to existing treatments” (Phytotherapy Research, December 2000, 14(8):581-91).
Scientists at the Laboratory of Natural Medicinal Materials in Tokyo (Japan) emphasize that Yashtimadhu was characteristic of the medicine systems of the ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and Chinese as one of the most commonly used plants. In Japan, the oldest Yashtimadhu species came from China in the 8th century, and continues to exist today in the Imperial Storehouse in Shosoin (Yakugaku Zasshi. October 2000, 120(10):849-62). Yashtimadhu grows in semitropical and warm regions of the world, mainly in the Mediterranean region and China.
The main component of Yashtimadhu and the one responsible for its characteristic sweet taste is called glycyrrhizin (also known as glycyrrhizic acid or glycyrrhizinic acid), and it is a glycoside 50 times sweeter than sucrose. Its flavonoid components include liquiritigenin and isoliquiritigenin. Glycyrrhizin has a gastroprotective effect and increases the rate of mucus secretion from the gastric mucosa. Glycyrrhizin is also responsible for the emollient, expectorant and antitussive properties of Yashtimadhu, while it is beneficial in reducing inflammation.According to official international literature Yashti Mandhu is considered beneficial in digestive functions, peptic ulcer and is known for its anti-arthritic and anti-allergic properties
